Climate risk & adaptation underwriting API
Quantifying the cost of adaptation actions versus inaction and pricing this into policies is arguably the Holy Grail for incentivising resilience among policyholders. BIN is excited to partner with an Insurtech that has developed a global underwriting API Solution that does exactly this.
It enables insurers to send property address (or lat/lon) and insured value information for any location in the world and receive back 350 data points on current and predicted climate change extremes predictions (2025-2100) for key perils including: river flood, surface water flood, coastal flood, wind, wildfire, subsidence, sea level rise, and extreme temperature.
The platform returns both the hazard and predicted loss for the 100-year risk as well as the potential impact a range of climate adaptation measures could have. All scenarios are IPCC accredited.
Benefits to insurers
- Quantify global climate risk/losses for property underwriting risk selection/pricing with extreme granularity (model resolution up to 5m x 5m)
- Quantify ground-up damage with and without climate adaptation measures
- Calculate the cost of premium breaks/discounts based on homeowner resilience or property retrofitting
User story
An underwriter insures a property in a region susceptible to extreme hail (>2cm) events and has witnessed increasing losses to nearby roofs. However, the property has installed a new hail-resistant shingle roof.
- The underwriter sends the location and property value estimation to the Solution via API.
- This returns back 350 data metrics, including hazard information and the average annual loss (AAL) information expected with/without a hail resistant shingle roof.
- The underwriter offers the client a discount based on their proactive resilient roof structure.
Proof of concept trials
